Ask an Alim

Working as an Investment Banker

Q:

Assalam Walekum, May Allah have his chosen blessings upon you. I want to ask you whether its permissible in Islam to work as an investment banker in investment banks like JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley, Barclays etc. If its not then what are the career options if I want to pursue an MBA in Finance. Thanks, -Haider Raza

A:

Alaykum Salaam

Agha Sistani allows working in a bank as long as one is not in charge of transactions that involve usury or interest.

This is especially so when one is in charge of setting and negotiating these charges. That will apply to the other positions you seek also

Kind regards
