Ask an Alim

Is it permissible to watch a video in which Prophet Muhammad’s (S.A.W) companions are shown through characters?

Q:

Assalam Alaykum,
Peace, mercy and blessings of Allah be upon you and all of Ummah.

I am a teacher by profession and I have to teach an important chapter about the birth and spread of Islam to my students. We are instructed to use technology and other audio-visual aids to improve our teaching-learning process. There is a video about the spread of Islam. In this video Muslims are shown capturing Makkah and breaking the idols. The characters are definitely representing companions of Prophet Muhammad. My question is that is it not haraam to depict, make image of our prophet and any of his companion? below is the link for your reference.

A:

Wa Alaykumussalam

Thank you for your query.

Some producers make the video or animation but put a light on the face of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w.w, this is the best way of depiction, but some others would show the face of the Holy Prophet. So in the latter case, if it is not counted as desecration then there is no problem in it.

According to Ayatullah al-Udhma Sayyid Ali Sistany:

Question: Is it permissible to draw or produce a scene which shows the Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.), one of the past prophets or the infallible Imams (a.s.), or other luminaries and show it in cinema, on television or theater?

Answer: If due deference and respect is observed, and the scene does not contain anything that would detract from their holy pictures in the minds [of the viewers], there is no problem.
