Ask an Alim

Is it permissible to use pension money.

Q:

Assalamoaliekum Mufti Sab
I have a question regarding pension from UBL Bank.
My father was working in UBL up to 1997. They retired with the golden handshake but without any  pension.
In 2017 Supreme Court order Bank to pay  pension to all employees. My father died in 2000 and My mother is eligible for  pension money . I told and tried to convince her not to take a pension from the bank but she refused. Now what should we do in such conditions because she is receiving pension from the last two weeks. Pension received  per month is 8400.
She spent the whole pension money for  our house expenses, I am feeling guilty. When I told my Mother not to use this money  for household expenses , but my mother said that I grew up with Bank money. Please guide me in this regard.
Me and My brother  give her monthly money, now she said I will take pension and also what we brothers give monthly money.

Please guide me in this regard.

Wa Alaykumussalam

Thank you for your query.

If receiving pension is under the Law of the government then there is no problem in receiving and using that money.

Question: What about the pension received by retired people? Do they have to set khums aside on receipt thereof or delay payment of khums until the new tax year?

Answer: Khums should be paid on the surplus amount in the new tax year.
