Child’s Surname

1) Can a mother give her children her surname and not the fathers surname, even though the parents are married and living together? 2) Are there any specific requirements or rules regarding the surname of the child in Islam? 3) Also, these days its trendy to make up a new name for the child’s surname, is this permissible?

There are no restrictions in Islam in regards to one’s surname, i.e. a child can have his father’s or his mother’s surname, or even a completely new one.

Regarding the last one however, just like giving a child a first name, it would be preferable to choose suitable names that are associated with Allah (swt) or the Holy Prophet (s) or his Progeny (s).
