Ask an Alim

Is it permissible to get rid of the dark body parts of my body through a surgery?

Q:

Is it permissible to get rid of the dark body parts of my body through a surgery? I have dark pigmented sports on few of my body parts including private parts not all my body is of the same color. The rest of the body color is different than those parts. So is it halal to get rid of those darken part through laser? I was not born this way. It just occured

A:

Salamun Alaykum

Thank you for your query.

Mujtahideen don’t allow the private parts to be seen by anyone except husband and wife who are permitted to see each other. Unless required, if there is a medical requirement then one is permissible but if there is no medical necessity then one is not allowed to show the private parts to anyone, let alone opposite sex doctor.

Therefore, just changing the color of the skin does not make the cosmetic surgery of the skin near the private parts -that involves exposure of private parts- permissible. However, if the private part isn’t visible then there is no problem in the surgery.

If there is a male doctor for a women to undergo an unnecessary surgery, even if the private parts are not visible, it is considered haram.

According to Ayatullah al-Udhma Sayyid Ali Sistany:
Question: Is cosmetic surgery allowed?
Answer: It is permissible, provided that one refrains from looking and touching what is haram to look at or touch.
