Ask an Alim

Is it permissible to earn through Commission?

Q:

Assalamu alaikum,

I am working in Saudi Arabia with one of the company’s Marketing Department. I have a question related to commission. Last week we received a service request from a company (they are not our customers, may be in future), They requested for that services which our company is not dealing in, So for them I take that service from the 3rd party, so the 3rd Party gives me 900 Riyals per day & I sell it for 1000 Riyal per day to my company, and my company sells it to their client for 1300 Riyal per day. So my question is , can I take this  100 Riyal as my commission, is it  Halal or Haram for me to earn this way?

Wa Alaykumussalam

Thank you for your query.

If you represent your company and become a wakil then you are not allowed to take anything above the contract price. But if you are dealing outside company and the company knows or if they know will not make a problem for you, then it is permissible for you to buy the material or services from them and then sell to your company outside your working hours.

Alternatively, First, you will have to buy it for yourself and then you can sell it at a higher price to anyone.

May Allah(swt) grant you success

Wassalam,

Syed Haider
