Ask an Alim

is it ok to hide Illegal Relation from my husband

Q:

Aoa I cheated my husband and had physical relation with another man. This other man told everything to my husband. My husband asked me and to save my marriage and my kids i told him i just talked to this other man. My husband believed me bcoz he loves me a lot and forgave me. But my question is … is it ok to hide from my husband the complete truth to save my marriage and my kids. I fear that man will show my husband the proofs of meetings i had with him. I did tauba and promised ill not do anything wrong again.

A:

Wa alaykum salaam

There is no doubt that the sin you have committed is one of the major sins (gunahe kabira) in Islam and very much disliked by Allah.
But from the fact that Allah is the most merciful (Arhamur raahimeen), He has kept the door of tawba open and has encouraged the sinners to repent by saying:
 إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ التَّوَّابِينَ
Allah loves those who repent.
(2:222)
Whereas disclosing of one’s sin is concerned, this act is strictly discouraged in our religion. we come across many instances in history where people used to come to the Prophet saww and Imam Ali a.s with the intention of disclosing their sins but they were firmly stopped by them. As man’s honor and respect is so valued and significant in Islam that he is only allowed to confess to his Lord .
It is narrated by Imam Reza a.s:
 «الْمُسْتَتِرُ بِالسَّیِّئَةِ مَغْفُورٌ لَهُ»
Concealer of a sin is forgiven by Allah.
My dear sister!
Our religion doesn’t allow us to disclose our sin even to our closest family.
With regards to your issue, its very pleasing to know that you have realized your mistake and have done tawba.
If you have done real and sincere tawba and dont have the intention of repeating your sin, you dont need to worry about the consequences.
If you lead your life according to Allah’s will, He will surely help you in every step of your life and will grant you the best in both the worlds.
Sukaina Taqavi.
