Ask an Alim

Is it legal to work in a conventional bank in an Islamic country?

Q:

Is it legal to work in a conventional bank in an Islamic country? As far I know usury is haram, but what is the principle to decide if an element of interest is usury or not usury?

A:

Salamun Alaykum

Thank you for your query.

According to Mujtahideen if you are not working in the department that deals with usury(Riba) it is allowed to work but if you have to deal with usury it is impermissible.

According to Ayatullah al-Udhma Sayyid Ali Sistany:

There are two types of dealings and transactions:

  1. Haram banking transactions: Such as usurious transactions and representation in their execution, recording and witnessing them and receiving the excess usurious amount for the benefit of the recipient, as well as transactions related to companies that have usurious transactions or are engaged in wine trade, such as selling their shares for them, are the transactions that are considered haram transactions. And employment in the mentioned sectors is not allowed and they are not entitled to use the salary.
  2. Halal banking transactions: If the transaction is not from the above mentioned transactions and dealings, then it is permissible.
