Ask an Alim

Is it compulsory to fast when doing exams?

Q:

Is it compulsory to fast whilst doing exams?

As-salāmu ʿalaykum

I was wondering if it was compulsory to fast whilst doing exams as I have exams in May. Is it excusable for me to miss my fast and pay money to charity or is there any other way so I do not get gunnah for missing my fasts.

Jazākallāh

Having exams is not a valid excuse to not fast and will be considered breaking your fast intentionally with out a valid excuse.

Keep in mind that fasting (if done properly) is actually good for intellectual sharpness and learning! It should help you rather than hinder you.

Trust in Allah Subhanahuwatallah and all the best in your exams.
