Ask an Alim

Is it better as per shariyah laws to bury our loved ones in a muslim country?

Q:

In muslims or shariyah laws  is it better to bury our  loved ones in a muslim country ..?

A:

Salamun Alaykum

Thank you for your query.

It is not permissible to bury a Muslim in a non-Muslim cemetery and bury a non-Muslim in a Muslim cemetery. You can bury the Muslim in a Muslim cemetery living in a non-Muslim country.

We find in hadith if a person is buried in Najaf in Wadi Al-Salam, will be saved from the punishment in the grave, and on the other hand, we have hadith which says just getting buried will not result in the dead being saved from the punishment. Hence, we understand it is the deeds of a person that matters along with the faith and Imaan but as it is not possible for everyone to get buried in Holy places, hence a Muslim getting buried in a Muslim cemetery in a non-Muslim country, itself is a blessing.

May Allah(swt) grant you success
