Ask an Alim

Is it acceptable for Valima to take place say 6 months after Nikkah+Ruksathi

Q:

I understand Valima is sunnat, and the Islamic Marriage Handbook* states “Valima is highly recommended on the groom”.

My daughter is due to have her Nikkah/Rukhsati, and move to the groom’s house.  Due to personal circumstances, the groom would like to hold the valima ceremony after 6 months or so.  Is that acceptable from a religious perspective ?

Salamun Alaykum

Thank you for your query.

Walima is Mustahab. In a hadith from Imam Kazim(as) it has come that walima is on 5 ocassions.

  1. Wedding
  2. Child’s birth
  3. Circumcision
  4. Buying house
  5. Returning from Makkah (Haj)

One should give walima after marriage but if it isn’t possible due to any reason soon after the marriage, then you can do it after 6 months as you mentioned. One must be careful that since Walima is Mustahab, there shouldn’t be anything haram happening such as mix gathering/music etc.

My duas with the couple that they walk on the footsteps of Ahlul Bayt(as).

May Allah(swt) grant you success
