Ask an Alim

Is fal done using the Quran?

Q:

Is it true that we can do fal from Qur’an ? If yes then how can we do istakhara (fal) from Qur’an ?

A:

Salamun Alaykum

Thank you for your query.

Istikhara is done to seek goodness from God when a person is in doubt between two things and Faal is a practice not endorsed in Sharia, and it involves a form of fortune-telling and foreseeing the future.
Seeking faal from the Quran is not permissible. If it is attributed to religion, it is not permissible. That is, if someone claims that this superstitious act is part of the religion, it is considered forbidden.

It is appropriate for a person, in the matters on which they intend to decide, to first contemplate and be cautious or seek advice from experienced and reliable individuals. If their uncertainty persists, they may resort to Istikhara. In any case, there is no religious obligation to perform Istikhara. However, if you have performed Istikhara for a specific action, it is better not to act contrary to it. As long as the circumstances and conditions of the matter have not changed, there is no reason for repeating Istikhara.

There are different Duas for Istikhara. One of the methods is to recite the following Dua:

اَللّهُمَّ اِنّى تَفَأَّلْتُ بِکِتابِکَ، وَ تَوَکَّلْتُ عَلَیْکَ، فَاَرِنى مِنْ کِتابِکَ ما هُوَ مَکْتُومٌ مِنْ سِرِّکَ الْمَکْنُونِ فـى غَیْبِـکَ

Meaning of the above Dua: O Allah, I have consulted Your Book and placed my trust in You. Show me from Your Book what is written by Your hidden knowledge, in Your unseen secrets

Then open the Quran, and look for the first verse on the right side to get the answer of your Istikhara. One can only know the answer of the Istikhara to be good or bad when he understands the verse. But when it comes to understanding and grasping the meaning of the verses, it must be said that this is not something universally understandable and accessible to everyone. Understanding the Quran involves highly complex subjects that demand their own tools. It requires familiarity with the Quran, Quranic sciences, interpretation, and so on, knowledge that comes with years of being engaged with the Quran and comprehending its language. Therefore, this matter doesn’t have a simple formula that can be easily learned and executed.
