Ask an Alim

Is hating a ruling about Islam Kufr and is liking other religions Kufr?

Q:

Assalamualaikum, I have read your other fatwa that disliking a ruling about Islam is not disbelief, but what about verses 47:8-9, do they abrogate 2:216?

Also, is liking other religions but not believing in them Kufr or Shirk? I can not control liking them, I just do. But I know that Islam is the only true religion and would not even think about following those other religions.

A:

Wa Alaykumussalam

Thank you for your query.

There is a difference between disliking something or disbelieving . Disbelieving leads to infidelity(kufr). Infidelity is where a person denies God or the Prophet or the ruling of the religion brought by Prophet Muhammad(s.a.w.w) and says that it is a lie or not divine.

The first verses(Surah Muhammad 47/ 8-9) you have mentioned:

وَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا فَتَعْسًا لَهُمْ وَأَضَلَّ أَعْمَالَهُمْ  ذَلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ كَرِهُوا مَا أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ فَأَحْبَطَ أَعْمَالَهُمْ

And (as for) those who disbelieve, for them is destruction and He has made their deeds ineffective.

That is because they hated what Allah revealed, so He rendered their deeds null.

These verses are about disbelief, which causes deeds to be void.

The second verse you quoted is as follows:

كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الْقِتَالُ وَهُوَ كُرْهٌ لَكُمْ  وَعَسَى أَنْ تَكْرَهُوا شَيْئًا وَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَكُمْ وَعَسَى أَنْ تُحِبُّوا شَيْئًا وَهُوَ شَرٌّ لَكُمْ  وَاللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ وَأَنْتُمْ لَا تَعْلَمُونَ

Fighting is enjoined on you, and it is an object of dislike to you; and it may be that you dislike a thing while it is good for you, and it may be that you love a thing while it is evil for you, and Allah knows, while you do not know.(Surah Baqarah/216)

This verse is general and includes Muslims as well.

Allah(swt) says, that God knows your goodness and does not rule against it

One of the pillars of our religion is faith in the previous Prophets, their books and their religion. And we must love them but at the same time, we must know that these religions have already been distorted(تحریف) and what we have in this era is all changed. Distorted and changed religion is no longer a proper religion. But we respect those who are monotheists and have a religion. It doesn’t mean that we start loving Buddhism or other religions which are not at all from God. If our love towards the other religions results in our conversion to those religion then this attraction is Haram as liking shouldn’t result in believing them.

I would highly recommend you to read the books regarding belief(Theology). One of the easiest books to understand will be: https://www.al-islam.org/fifty-lessons-principles-belief-youth-naser-makarem-shirazi

Once we learn about Islam which is the best religion, our love and attraction would increase and we will become a true Muslim with a strong faith and our love towards other religion would decrease since all the religions have been distorted nowadays. This would result in loving our religion more and more and hence, one wouldn’t dislike any rules given by the Almighty.

May God forbid, if a person who dislikes/hates any of the Islamic rulings, doesn’t strengthen his faith and Imaan, would eventually lead in disbelieving the whole religion

May Allah(swt) grant you success
