Is celebrating Nowruz permissible, and what significance does the festival hold?

Q:

Assalamualaikum, Is celebrating Nowruz permissible, and what significance does the festival hold?

A:

Wa Alaykumussalam

Thank you for your question

Nowruz is the beginning day of spring and of the solar Hijri calendar. The celebration of Nowruz is considered the oldest symbol of Persian culture from before Islam until today. The celebration contains a collection of national, ethnic, and religious customs and traditions. Nowruz is celebrated in several countries and nations and is a national holiday in some countries. The United Nations has officially recognized the “International Nowruz Day” in its calendar.

Nowruz is recognized in some traditions as a blessed day and certain prayers and rituals are prescribed for it but some do not accept it to be a blessed day according to Islam.

But as far as things are not done against the teachings of Islam in the celebration, there is no problem in it. Usually, Iranians visit their relatives during the Nowruz festival which is a good way to keep connections alive with the relatives.

May Allah(swt) grant you success
