Ask an Alim

is bribery allowed for our work to be done

Q:

Asslam-o-alaikum, Venerable, i have been appointed as a school teacher recently and have passed three months, which are necessary to pass for getting salary. Now i have listened from many colleagues that without paying the money(bribery) in account office one can not get his salary. I am facing very difficult situation because i have to pay loans to many people and unable to meet daily family needs. My mind also not satisfied for giving them rishwat but i am very compelled. What i should do ? Should i give them money to get my salary so that i full fill needs of my family?

A:

Wa alaykum salam

Question: What is your ruling on getting one’s work done through bribery?

Answer: If someone’s duty is to do a job without getting money but he does not do it without receiving it, giving money to get something done is permissible but it is haram for the recipient to use the money.
