Ask an Alim

is Alchemy permissible

Q:

In the past history of Islam, there have been many muslim Alchemists. So is Alchemy permissible even when magic involved?

A:

Alchemy in the modern meaning is probably a fictitious matter and making a lot of effort in it is problematic.

There have been many Muslim Alchemists in the previous eras because the term simply referred to those who practised branches of chemistry. However, later the term took on a fictitious meaning that metals could be trans-mutated, and this is not something Muslim scholars engaged in.
