Interaction before Marriage

Q:

Assalamoalaikum. I’d like to ask if a female is allowed to ask questions to her prospective spouse in the presence of one of her family member? I’ve been told my family members that it is not allowed to speak to him or interact with him in any way. I’d like to know what the islamic perspective is. jazakAllah khair

A:

Waalaykum Salam sister

You certainly can ask your questions yourself keeping the Islamic laws and ethics like Hijab and the like forward.
If the family is sensitive with the idea, then you can have a family member accompany you. If the suitor prefers to speak to you in person, you can sit in a distance where your words cannot be heard by a third person but they can see you, say, a secluded room with the doors open and where you are clearly seen.

I hope this was useful
