Ask an Alim

Inheriting Haram wealth from the father

Q:

Aoa,

One of my female colleagues’ father was a drug dealer who died a few years back. Is it halal for her to use/invest her father’s inherited wealth for food, shelter, clothing and academic purposes, given that she is not independent and has no other source of income? If yes what precautions should she take? and in case of a no, which other options should she consider?

Thank you and May Allah bless you for guiding us.

A:

Wa Alaykumussalam

Thank you for your query.

  1. If she is not certain the wealth to be Haram, then she will inherit and can use it.
  2. But if her father’s halal wealth is mixed with haram, and if she does not know the Haraam amount and does not know its owners, the Khums should be paid and the rest can be inherited and used.
