Ask an Alim

I want to start a business platform for selling hallal and haram food items, is permissible ?

Q:

Assalamu Alayikum

I want to start a business that would allow people to sell food, it is basically a platform where people can sell food to other people. And the financial side of it works by charging a £1 fee for using the platform. There is an option where people can buy the meat that they sell from sources approved by us which would be halal. There is also the option where people can buy meat on their own which could be non-halal. I tried to make it a requirement that people should buy meat from sources approved by us(halal). However, since I have partners and investors, they made a requirement that it should only be an option to buy from our sources and that people should have the option not to buy from us. We will never the less be encouraging  people to buy from our sources.

Would this mean that I am facilitating evil and cooperating in sin by creating something that would allow people to sell haram food? Also since a commission is taken off each food sale, would the money that come from non-halal food sale be haram money?

Please advise me.

Jazak Allah Khairan

Wa Alaykumussalam

Thank you for your question

According to Ayatullah al-Udhma Sayyid Ali Sistany’s office:

If it has Halal benefit then due to Halal benefit you are allowed to do so.

So there is no sin on you if you create such platform intending to create for the Halal food and not for the Haram. As you are keeping an option of buying the halal meat approved by you, it is a very good option which you can spread in the future. But make sure pork or wine is not sold on your platform. But if your platform is mainly used for Haram then better to refrain.

May Allah(swt) grant you success
