Ask an Alim

I want to ask, Surah Al Nahl ayat 103 refers to whom?

Q:

I want to ask, Surah Al Nahl ayat 103 refers to whom?

A:

As-salamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah

thanks for your question

16:103 “We certainly know that they say, ‘It is only a human that instructs him.’ The language of him to whom they refer is non-Arabic, while this is a clear Arabic language.”

Because of the uniqueness of Quran, it was very hard for non-believers to accept it from prophet (sawa), especially considering he was unschooled (ummi) so they started accusing prophet (sawa) of learning whatever he knows from someone else, a non-Arab which this Aya  revealed to prove otherwise.

According to tafaseer there are 3,4 candidate in narrations for this accusation (the person that non-believers thought instructs prophet sawa):

  1. Bala’am: according to a hadith from Ibn abbas there was non-Arab in Mecca that was a Christian, named Bala’am; and they said prophet learn from him
  2. Yasar or Jabar: according to a hadith from Abdullah Ibn Muslim al-Hazrami there was a non-Arab (from west) servant called Yasar or Jabar and new old and new testament and non-believers claimed that prophet (sawa) is learning from him
  3. Salman, the Persian or Salmān al-Fārisī: Zahhak says that Salman was the non-Arab in this accusation
