A:

Salamun Alaykum

Thank you for your query.

According to Ayatullah al-Udhma Sayyid Ali Sistany:

In verbal encounters, some people resort to swearing, so much so that it could amount to blaspheming Allah, the Most High, or lampooning the Infallibles (a.s.). On the whole, such people are not serious in their statements. Should punishment be administered to them?

– So long as they were not serious and they did not mean what they say, divine punishment must not be meted out to them. However, they should be reprimanded (ta’zeer).

People who say blasphemy and insult the sacred are not all the same. We can divide them into three categories:

  1. Some of them say blasphemy and insult the sanctities due to the problem or calamity that has befallen them due to their intolerance
  2. Some people insult because they have been deceived and do not have enough information to invalidate the right.
  3. Some are neither angry nor ignorant, but are biased, disobedient and vindictive, and they use every opportunity to slander.

The third group is the one who deserves the real punishment as they create mishaps in the society due to their misguidance. But if you had uttered blasphemy and later asked for forgiveness then indeed Allah(swt) will forgive you but make sure this doesn’t happen again.

In Surah Ma’arij verses 19-21 it has come:

إِنَّ الْإِنْسَانَ خُلِقَ هَلُوعًا {19} إِذَا مَسَّهُ الشَّرُّ جَزُوعًا {20}  وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ الْخَيْرُ مَنُوعًا {21}

Surely man is created of a hasty temperament

Being greatly grieved when evil afflicts him

And niggardly when good befalls him

Therefore, we should remember Allah(swt) in all the times, whether at the time of happiness or sorrow.

Read Qur’an every day and try to read the translation to know what our beautiful religion teaches us. Allah(swt) loves the person who repents and gets back to Him. One of the reasons of uttering blasphemy is the lack of faith and most importantly knowledge of Allah(swt). So, we should try to increase our Imaan(faith) and knowledge. Listen to lectures that actually give you something and are new to you.

I would highly recommend you to read the books regarding belief(Theology). One of the easiest books to understand will be: https://www.al-islam.org/fifty-lessons-principles-belief-youth-naser-makarem-shirazi

May Allah(swt) grant you success

Wassalam,
