Ask an Alim

I really want to know what Allah says about this is becoming a good person more important or offering prayer.

Q:

I have some doubts in my mind. Mostly people say offering prayers is the first thing every muslim should do even if he is committing any sin. I have a question does quran really say that offering prayers is the first priority and becoming a good peson, who does good deeds is secondary thing because in todays world we see many people who offer prayers but commit sins and on the contrary there are people who are good human but dont pray. So I really want to know what Allah says about this is becoming a good person more important or offering prayer. Although I know that mostly people say that through prayers one can only become a good person but what about those who perform good deeds but dont offer prayers that too often .

Salamun Alaykum

Thank you for your query.

First of all, it is definite that Allah wants His servants to be good.

Secondly, we have to see what is meant by being good. Is it good from our point of view or good from Allah’s perspective who is the Creator of the universe and human being?

By studying Islam from Quran and Sunnah we understand that whatever Allah(swt) says is the requirement and based on that, we can call the person good or bad.

Don’t just see what people say rather see what Allah(swt) says and wants from His servants.

In Quran and Sunnah, the parameters of being a good person are mentioned, i.e.: a person should have proper faith in God, His Prophet and his successors(Infallible Imams). This faith which is the roots of religion(Usul-al-Deen) will make a person get stronger in branches of religion(Furu-al-Deen) which are the actions such as Salah, fasting, Haj etc. Therefore, the stronger the faith one has, the better the actions would be.

Islam can be categorized into 3 main categories

  1. Beliefs, the ideology of a person (Usul-al-Deen)
  2. Actions (Furu-al-Deen)
  3. Akhlaq (Ethics)

This is what Allah(swt) wants from all of His servants. If we abide by these, that is to be good in all these 3 things, one can be called a good Muslim.

Now, what you see from people such as “non-Muslims” or some “non-practising Muslims” is the 3rd thing which is ethics without the first two things. Do you think Allah(swt) wanted just the 3rd thing from His servants so we can call them good? No, He wants the person to be good in all 3 aspects i.e: having good and strong beliefs, acting upon his wajibat and having good Akhlaq.

People give charity in this world but are not Muslims. Although, their work is good they will get the reward in this world but does this qualify the non-muslim to be good in the eyes of Allah while this very person doesn’t believe Allah(swt) and His Prophet in the way Allah wants?

Therefore, Allah had asked the person to pray, and to be good to parents, relatives and others. Eventually, it becomes clear that all the 3 categories are the criteria for a person to be good in the eyes of Allah(swt). Each one of has its own place, and none of them is a substitute for the other.

One of the great and easy books to strengthen our beliefs:

May Allah(swt) grant us Tofiq to be a good practicing Muslim.
