Ask an Alim

I have left Makkah without doing Tawaaf ul Widah

Q:

I have not done tawaf e widah before leaving Makkha,  but now I am still in Jeddha should I return to Makkha and perform Tawaf ul widha and then leave?

A:

Salamun Alaykum

Thank you for your query.

Shias perform Tawaf Al-Nisa at the end whereas Sunnis perform Tawaf al-Wida at the end of the pilgrimage before leaving Makkah.

According to both sects the Tawaf is Wajib and must be performed. According to Shias, if a person due to ignorance leaves Makkah without performing Tawaf Al-Nisa, he can ask someone on behalf of him to perform the Tawaf around the Ka’bah. If a man fails to perform it, his wife becomes unlawful for him. These are the teachings of Prophet(s.a.w.w) which were unfortunately altered and changed.

According to Ayatullah al-Udhma Sayyid Ali Sistany:

Tawaf-un-Nisa’ is the tenth obligation in Hajj. The eleventh is the prayer which follows it. Although they are obligatory, they are not among the basic elements (arkan) of Hajj. That is, failure to perform them, even deliberately, does not invalidate the Hajj.

Rule 417: Tawaf-un-Nisa is obligatory on both males and females. If a man fails to perform it, his wife becomes unlawful for him. If a woman fails to perform it, her man becomes unlawful for her. An agent performing Tawaf-un-Nisa will do so on behalf of the principal and not himself.

According to Ahlus Sunnah if one hasn’t performed Tawaf al-Wida, he has to perform sacrifice in Makkah and according to some if that is not possible he has to fast.

The opinion that we adopt here at Islamweb is the view of the majority of the scholars that Tawaaf Al-Wadaa’ is an obligation and that whoever fails to perform it is obliged to offer a sacrifice.

According to Darul Uloom Waqf Deoband:

Tawaf al-Wida (Farewell Tawaf) is performed by the pilgrims just before leaving Makkah after completing the Hajj.  It is the final rite that is performed in Makkah prior to moving on to the next destination. Doing tawaf-e-Wida is wajib for an Afaqi. The time of Tawaf-e-Widaa begins just after Tawaf-e-Ziyarat. If a person performed any tawaf after tawaf-e-ziayarat that will suffice from Tawaf-e-Widaa. However, if a person leaves Tawaf-e-Widaa completely, then Dum (slaughtering) becomes obligatory on him which is to be sacrificed in the premises of the holy Haram. If he is not there, he can send money to a person who will pay the Dum on his behalf. In the case you mention, your wife is Halal for you.
