Ask an Alim

I don’t have any purpose of life due to Depression

Q:

Assalaam o alaikum
I just am under so much stress that I am unable to pray. I see life is  a useless and senseless thing . I just do not see any purpose to anything.
I do not know how to come out of it,My heart seeks guidance of a person with very strong faith though most people say that have a direct connection with Allah but that I am unable to achieve. If any one could seek Allah we actually never needed prophets right?

A:

Wa Alaykumussalam

Thank you for your query.

those who have faith and whose hearts find rest in the remembrance of Allah.’ Behold! The hearts find rest in Allah’s remembrance!(Surah Ra’d/28)

Your query has few questions and doubts in itself. I will try to answer all the perspective. Your questions can be summed up into:

  1. Stress and depression which doesn’t let you pray.
  2. Do we really need Prophets?
  3. Seeing the life useless and senseless

Answer1:

You have to look what is the reason of your stress and depression. Depression causes problems and keeps the man under stress where one cannot take proper decisions or understand things in a proper way.

It was asked from Ayatullah Bahjat regarding a person who doesn’t pray what should he do, he replied the person should recite as many Salawat possible.

Others can help and guide you but it is you who can help yourself to get out of this situation.
Since I don’t know you and what you are going through, so it is not possible to point out the exact reason of your stress. So you have to look and find the reason which has caused stressed.

Some causes of stress

  1. Feel under lots of pressure
  2. Face big changes in your life
  3. Are worried about something
  4. Don’t have much or any control over the outcome of a situation
  5. Have responsibilities that you find overwhelming
  6. Don’t have enough work, activities or change in your life
  7. Experience discrimination, hate or abuse
  8. Are going through a period of uncertainty
  9. Are unmarried and in stress to find a life partner

Answer 2:

Regarding the last part of your question. We do need the Prophets. If there were no Prophets we wouldn’t have been a Monotheist, we wouldn’t be following One God. Would you be?

Why Do We Need Prophets?

  1. There is a need to remind people Of God
  2. There is a need for an incontrovertible authority
  3. There is a need for adoration of God
  4. There is a need to restrain the impulses
  5. There is a need for information about Afterlife

Answer 3:

  1. If you are under stress, you feel everything is in vain, then definitely you will feel everything to be useless and senseless and therefore you won’t even pray as Shaitan will make you get away from Allah’s unlimited bounties. Have we thanked the Almighty for the blessings he has bestowed us? We can’t even thank for the great blessings He had showered, then why do get away from Him rather getting closer to gain more mercies.
  2. Try to get closer to Allah(swt). It is said if you want to speak to God then you must pray and if you want God to speak to you, then recite Qur’an. So start reciting Quran every day and try to read the translation to get closer to Him. If we keep our connections strong enough, Allah(swt) will guide us and open many ways for us.
  3. Try to recite Duas and Tasbeeh(could be any tasbeeh like Istighfaar) to build tranquility. Such as reciting (ما شاءَ الله لا حَولَ وَ لا قوَّهَ إلّا باللهِ العَلِیِّ العَظیم)),14 times and reciting the verse(Surah Ra’d/28) as mentioned in the beginning on the answer.
  4. One of the reasons to feel this life to be useless is lack of faith in the Usoole Deen(Roots of Religion) especially Ma’ad(Hereafter). Therefore, if a person learns about it, he would definitely start acting upon the Wajibat regularly.

I would highly recommend you to read the books regarding belief(Theology). One of the easiest books to understand which covers all the topics is: https://www.al-islam.org/fifty-lessons-principles-belief-youth-naser-makarem-shirazi

Let’s remember Allah in all the situations and not only at the time of difficulty and forgetting him at the time of happiness. As stated in the Holy Quran:

When distress befalls man, he supplicates Us, [lying] on his side, sitting, or standing; but when We remove his distress, he passes on as if he had never supplicated Us concerning the distress that had befallen him. What they have been doing is thus presented as decorous to the transgressors.(Surah Yunus/2)

إِنَّ الْإِنْسَانَ خُلِقَ هَلُوعًا    إِذَا مَسَّهُ الشَّرُّ جَزُوعًا  وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ الْخَيْرُ مَنُوعًا

Surely man is created of a hasty temperament. Being greatly grieved when evil afflicts him. and grudging [charity] when good comes his way.(Surah Ma’rij/19-21)

May Allah(swt) grant you success
