I did not help a person in accident

Q:

Yesterday I saw a terrible accident on the highway. I was in a taxi and an accident happened behind us. The taxi driver did not stop. I called the rescue but kept the phone in my hand while my call was picked up for a few seconds as I was probably thinking about what to say..when I heard a voice it was recording, saying the number was busy, to call later.
Now I am not sure whether someone initially picked up my call and then disconnected it or it was recording all along. I asked my brother to call the rescue but he said another taxi driver stopped where the accident happened…at that moment I kept quiet but when I got home I started regretting that I did not try to call the rescue again and What if people nearby called the rescue late and that person may have died due to that..
I don’t even know what happened there afterwards and I feel extremely guilty. and How to prevent me from being like that because I never react How I should at a particular moment and then regret it afterwards and I hate that.

Al-Salam Alaykum
Thank you for your question.

It is good to learn that you feel responsible to help others and keep this regret with yourself for the future, so you do not miss the chance for a future similar occasion. But leave what happened in the past. if you can not do anything about what happened, it is just a waste of your energy. focus on the future and hope for the best. if your brother said others helped them, they got the rewards and Inshallah Allah reward you too for the feeling in your heart.
To feel better, set aside some charity for the person/ people who were involved in the accident and make a prayer for them so that they benefit from it, whether in this world or the next.
