A:

Wa Alaykumussalam

Thank you for your query.

And (as for) Lut, We gave him wisdom and knowledge, and We delivered him from the town which wrought abominations; surely they were an evil people, transgressors; (Sura Ambiya/74)
Allah(swt) has mentioned in Quran and previous holy texts the severe punishment of people of Sodom when they insisted on their evil practice despite the teaching of their Prophet Lut(as).

According to Ayatullah al-Udhma Sayyid Ali Sistany:

Question: Is sex change allowed?
Answer: If by sex change it means that by operation genital organs of a man is cut and instead urethra and artificial genital organs are made for him, and by injecting hormones, feminine signs like hair loss of the face or appearance of breast happen; or in the case of a woman if it means that man’s genital organs are made for her and by injecting hormones, manly signs like shrinking breast and growth of the hair on the face are made possible; these cases are not real sex change and religious rules applied to him/her do not change, and because in these cases, the genital organs need to be shown and touched; therefore, it is not allowed.
But if it means that the change in genital organs are internal and external which is the main difference between a man and a woman, then in this case and to its limit and without considering some Haram elements, there is no problem in it; but so far this case has not been proved (ascertained) and so far whatever has been accepted is change of appearance which has no effect on the (religious) rules.
Of course it is possible by operating on those who have problems with genital organs to bring out genital organs which were hidden in a man with feminine appearance without having internal genital organs or to cut manly genital organs from a woman who has internal feminine genital organs. And there is no problem in this (type of operation) in its limits which has no connection with sex change, and of course if it is needed that to look or to touch (the parts to be operated) it is only allowed if it is necessary or if by not doing so, difficulties may occur.

In modern time, when it is possible to identify the predominant sex of an individual and then reinforce and reveal that dominant sex with surgery, the cases of complicated hermaphrodite are extremely rare.
One should visit the doctor and identify the sex and gender and if your gender is male then you are not allowed to do the surgery and become and female as your male hormones will be dominant. Hence in this case one is not allowed to operate and change the gender. If that was the case many problems would be created.
Suppose a person is a female and forcibly changes her gender to male and marries a female, this results the female marrying another female which is Haram in Islam. Just the feeling of becoming male doesn’t make it Halal to change the gender.

No one was forced by creation to be a homosexual. All human beings were created on the instinct knowledge of good morals, but some people deviate to their own temptations away from the instinct morality. Homosexuality is a desire comes to few persons who follow it willingly but is has never been destined on any human being.
Keep praying 5 times a day, recite Qur’an everyday with translation(especially the story of Prophet Lut’s nation) and always ask Allah(swt) to help you. He has given us the choice and freedom and we can fight against it. If there is a will, there is a way. It would be difficult in the beginning but with the help of Almighty I am sure you can overcome these sorts of thoughts. Try to stay busy in different things so you can engage yourself in Halal ways and don’t get time for these sorts of feelings.

May Allah(swt) grant you success

Wassalam,

Syed Haider
