Ask an Alim

Q:

I am not allowed to work by government in my current residence country due to some incomplete documentation and will be allowed to work in a month inshallah.
My question is that my earnings will be halal or haram to work in current situation ???

A:

Salamun Alaykum

Thank you for your query.

You haven’t mentioned the country and work. If the work had been halal then the money you earn is considered Halal but at the same time breaking the law of your country is not allowed. Try to complete and speed up your official work so you are legally allowed to work.

According to Ayatullah al-Udhma Sayyid Ali Sistany’s office:

The earned money from Halal work is considered Halal. But one shouldn’t go against the laws of that country.

Question: A person has entered a country as a visitor and his passport was stamped that he was not allowed to work. If he works illegally and gets the money ‘under the table’, is it halal?

Answer: If the visa was granted against an undertaking that the person should not engage in any sort of employment during the period of his stay in the country, his infringement of the undertaking is Haram. However, this should not deny him the wages for the work; it is permissible that he has the right of disposal over it as he deems fit.
