Disturbing Dream

Q:

I am 28 years old and unmarried. I frequently see a dream that i am having sexual contacts (kissing and much more) with child’s and my family’s female members. this dream repeats itself with random frequency but it disturbs me a lot as i never even thought about such things and this frequent dream make me thinking as a sinful person and produce a feeling of guilt.

kindly tell me something about this.

A:

Bismillah

Firstly, seeing arousing dreams in itself is not a sin, since it is to a certain extent, beyond your control. Therefore, the feeling of guilt should not take you towards despair, negative thinking and putting yourself down.

Disturbing dreams can be controlled through various means. Some of the advice given by scholars is that:

1. One should not go to bed stomach full (i.e. eat less). Before going to sleep use your time in mental, rational activities (like reading non-fiction, studying, etc..) and not actions that stem from imagination (like watching movies, music, reading novels, etc..). Perhaps even better, one should always try and control the faculty of imagination through indulging in actions that are rational and logical.

2. Sleep with clothes on

3. Go to the bathroom before sleeping

4. Perform muhassiba before sleep (recounting all your actions of the day, and seeking forgiveness for your sins and thanking Allah swt for the good actions)

One should also seek Allah (swt)’s help in this matter: In one hadith we find that Imam Sadiq (s) tells one of the companions that if you fear seeing a wet dream then before going to sleep recite the following dua:
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّی أَعُوذُ بِکَ مِنَ
الِاحْتِلَامِ وَ مِنْ سُوءِ الْأَحْلَامِ وَ مِنْ أَنْ یَتَلَاعَبَ بِیَ
الشَّیْطَانُ فِی الْیَقَظَةِ وَ الْمَنَام‏

Oh Allah I seek your protection from janabah and seeing bad dreams and that shaytan plays with me in my sleep and in my wakefulness.

Finally, if there is a possibility, then do get married.
