Ask an Alim

Has my zakat been nullified….

Q:

A guy ask for help financially. He found a job abroad and told me he need money for his expense to travel there. He is from a poor background. I supported him by giving away my zakat due. However after travelling abroad, he changed his mind to go back. In this case, is my zakat nullified?

A:

Salam alaykum,

Thank you for your question.

According to the office of Ayatullah al-Udhma Sistani in Qum, you are only responsible to pay your religious tax (zakat) to the person eligible for it. However, what that person does with it following this is not your concern or religious responsibility. So, in brief, no, your zakat has not been nullified. Thank you again for your question.
