Fasting on Someone’s Behalf

Q:

Salamun Alaykum With Ramadan fast approaching, I would like to make an inquiry to whether or not you can fast on someone else’s behalf. This is in regards to my mother as she is unable to fast due to an illness of hers and is unable to make up these fast, she does pay Fidyah each year but I was wondering if I would be able to fast on her behalf during the holy month of Ramadan. I of course would make up these fasts on my behalf later in the year, however I was wondering if it is necessary or even allowed in Islam? Many Thanks, may Allah bestow his blessings on you.

A:

Alaykum Salaam.

It is not permissible to fast on behalf of anyone during their lifetime.

According to Ayatullah Sistani, if she is unable to fast nor make up the fasts during the year, Qadha is not obligatory on her and the Fidya will be sufficient.
