Fasting for Frequent Traveler

Q:

AOA
I am a frequent traveler and drive to different cities for work. I am planning to fly overseas during Ramadan. It would be difficult for me to fast due to changing time zones. Do I need to fast if I fly internationally during Ramadan? If I must fast, but I do not, do I just have to do qadha or give kaffarah? Please advise.
Thank you

A:

Wa Alaykumussalam

Thank you for your query.

If you travel for less than 10 days or to a place which is not counted as your hometown(the place where you will pray Qasr Salat), you should not fast.

If you are not supposed to fast, then you will just have to make the Qadha of the fast but if you intentionally leave or break the fast, then you must pay Kaffarah for every single day you have not fasted.

I will mention some of the rulings about Traveler’s fast according to Ayatullah al-Udhma Sayyid Ali Sistany. For the detailed rulings visit the site below:

Ruling 1683. A traveller must not fast if his obligation on a journey is to perform the four-unit (rakʿah) prayers as two rakʿahs [i.e. in qar form]. A traveller who performs his prayer in its complete (tamām) form – such as someone whose work is travelling or whose journey is sinful – must fast on his journey.

Ruling 1684. Travelling during the month of Ramadan is not forbidden. However, travelling to escape fasting is disapproved. Similarly, travelling in general in the month of Ramadan is disapproved except for ʿumrah or because of necessity.

Ruling 1690. If a fasting person travels after uhr, he must, based on obligatory precaution, complete his fast; and in such a case, it is not necessary for him to make up that fast. If he travels before uhr, then based on obligatory precaution, he cannot fast on that day, particularly if he had made the intention to travel the night before. In any case, he must not do anything that invalidates a fast before reaching the permitted limit (add altarakhkhu); otherwise, kaffārah becomes obligatory for him.

Question: What is the Kaffara for breaking one’s fast intentionally?

Answer: One who has broken his fast intentionally he must, in addition to making up the Qadha of that day, and it is sufficient that he may feed 60 poor believer (Momin – abiding to the Islamic laws) to their fill or he must give 750 grams of food stuffs (wheat or bread or rice) to each one of them, or fast for 60 days. One may authorise an agent, to perform the feedings of the poor on his behalf.

Question: I travelled a day in the month of Ramadhan, and during the year I was unable to perform the Qadha fast, what is Kaffarah of delaying the Qadha of fast?

Answer: If a person does not give the Qadha of his fast until the next Ramadhan, he should give 750 grams of food stuffs (wheat or bread or rice) to the poor for each missed day and must perform the Qadha fast too.
