Ask an Alim

Does Allah swt accept taubah of a person at the last stage of cancer…..

Q:

If someone knows that he has cancer at last stage and will be dead in few weeks and then this person makes tauba knowing that he will be dead soon. To what degree this tauba will be accepted by Allah Almighty?

A:

Wa Alaikum al-salam

Thanks for your question.

First, we ask Allah swt to give shifa and speedy recovery to every believer who is ill and suffers from cancer. second we should know that it’s not definite, according to the last Aya of surah Loqman no one can determine the time and place of their death.
regarding tauba and repentance to Allah swt our prophet swa said “whoever repent toward Allah 1 year before his death, Allah swt will forgive him, then prophet swa said 1 year is a lot if a person repent to Allah swt 1 month before his death Allah swt will forgive him, then prophet swa said 1 month is a lot, if a person repent to Allah swt 1 friday(week) before his death, then prophet swa said 1 friday is a lot, if a person repent to Allah swt 1 day before his death Allah swt will forgive him, then again prophet swa said 1 day is a lot, i a person repent to Allah swt 1 hour before his death Allah swt will forgive him, once again prophet swa said 1 hour is a lot, i a person repent to Allah swt before the Soul reaches the Throat at the Time of Death (moments before death) Allah swt will forgive him ”
asking forgiveness from Allah swt is called Istighfar. Allah’s forgiveness is unlimited but it doesn’t mean we can do any sin and then seek Allah’s forgiveness by saying astaghfirullah. effective istighfar has conditions that are mentioned in quran and narrations like regret and making a mend. here is a hadith from imam ali a.s in nahjolbalaghe:
“Someone said before Amir al-mu’minin, peace be upon him: “Astaghfiru’llah” (I ask Allah’s forgiveness), then Amir al-mu’minin, peace be upon him, said: Your mother may lose you! Do you know what “istighfar” (asking Allah’s forgiveness) is? “Istighfar” is meant for people of a high position. It is a word that stands on six supports. The first is to repent over the past; the second is to make a firm determination never to revert to it; the third is to discharge all the rights of people so that you may meet Allah quite clean with nothing to account for; the fourth is to fulfil every obligation which you ignored (in the past) so that you may now do justice with it; the fifth is to aim at the flesh grown as a result of unlawful earning, so that you may melt it by grief (of repentance) till the skin touches the bone and a new flesh grows between them; and the sixth is to make the body taste the pain of obedience as you (previously) made it taste the sweetness of disobedience. On such an occasion you may say “astaghfiru’llah”.
