Ask an Alim

Does a revert have to wear hijab if her husband orders her too?

Q:

As a revert who’s married and lives with her non Muslim parents who still don’t know she’s Muslim because she will be kicked out if found out she’s Muslim, does she have to observe the hijab as her husband orders her too?

Her husband cannot financially provide for them fully at the moment as they are both young but he orders her to wear it outside the house and tells her she is disobeying Allah SWT and the verse about wives being obedient to their husbands as said on (4:34 Quran)if she’s not wearing hijab. She fully covers up and dresses modestly the only issue is that if caught wearing hijab by family or relativeples she will be in a very difficult situation. Is it reasonable in terms of Islamic obligations for the husband to leave his wife if she doesn’t follow his command ?

Salam Alaykum,

To answer your question, I can say that the wearing of the hijab is an obligation that God has prescribed for women in Islam. So, regardless of whether your husband orders you to wear it or not, it is obligatory for you to wear it.

On the other hand, your husband should arrange accommodation for you as it his religious obligation, especially when it becomes difficult for you to follow your religion without it, even if the accommodation is below average. On the other hand, it is your responsibility to follow God’s command, even if it requires arranging separate accommodation. If this is impossible or extremely difficult, then to the best of your ability, observe the religious veil (hijab), and where you cannot fully observe it, do not abandon it completely but observe it as much as possible.”
