Ask an Alim

Do allah accept a wrong dua?

Q:

There is a saying in quran that”nothing written for you will be given to others”…In such case if someone ask for others life will allah give that to them???

A:

Salamun Alaykum

If you mean that if we do bad dua for the other person or curse him/her, would Allah swt accept that bad dua from you or not, then I would like to mention few points here.

Islam is the most complete religion. Islam and Quran teaches us to stay away from cursing and revenge. A Muslim should do dua for the other person instead of cursing or doing the bad dua for someone else. If an individual is disheartened then one must try to forgive the other person. If we see bad, wrong or flaw from others then we should do Dua for their guidance which eventually is good for us as Allah swt will bestow His mercies on us.

It has been narrated from Prophet Muhammad s.a.w.w that if someone does Bad to us, then we should do good in return and if we have been deprived of anything, we should forgive the other.

Allah swt says in Surah Noor/22 :

وَلْيَعْفُوا وَلْيَصْفَحُوا أَلَا تُحِبُّونَ أَن يَغْفِرَ اللَّـهُ لَكُمْ وَاللَّـهُ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ

Do you not love that Allah should forgive you? Allah is all-forgiving, all-merciful

From this we understand, if we forgive others then we would be forgiven by Allah swt.

Some people will curse others if something wrong or bad (even if minor) is done to them by others. A question arises, Does Allah swt accept all the curse and bad duas or in other words, do the curse and bad duas get accepted?

In order to get our good duas accepted there are conditions. The same way as every dua is not accepted, the cursing and the bad dua is also not accepted. If a person is disheartened or annoyed by someone and curses, the person who is cursed, won’t be cursed this easily. If this was to happen that every curse and bad dua for others get accepted then there would be uproar and chaos in this world. So, Allah swt knows the best time to accept the duas and if an individual had been deprived of his/her right and have been oppressed then the Almighty will definitely give his right in the Hereafter if not in this world.

In Quran, there are around 21 groups who have been cursed by Allah. The ones who are cursed by Allah swt will always remain away from Allah’s mercies such as oppressors, satan, liars and.…

We should be careful of our own deeds and not be amongst those who are cursed by Allah. And God forbid if we are oppressing someone then we shouldn’t oppress the Mazloom which indeed has the severe punishment for the oppressors rather we should be with the Mazloom and oppressed ones.

To conclude I will quote an incident below.

Malik Al-Ashtar was one of the most loyal companions of Imam Ali Ibn Abi Talib(as) and was appointed by his eminence as governor-general in Egypt. Despite his great position and courage and despite the fact that he was deeply respected by the Commander of the Faithful (a.s.), Malik al-Ashtar was walking down the street one day, when a boy, who was unknown to him, began to bully Malik: perhaps, he even threw stones at him. The boy noticed that someone was venturing off somewhere, and he decided to make fun of Malik for amusement. However, Malik al-Ashtar avoided him and changed his direction.

The onlookers said to the boy, “Do you know what you just did? Do know whom you just made fun of?” But the boy was unaware, and he said, “No.”

The onlookers replied. “That was Malik al-Ashtar.”

The boy became agitated, he rushed after Malik, either on his own or with his father and friends, to make some form of an apology. They felt the need to apologize to avoid trouble.

They went after Malik al-Ashtar, and they found him in the mosque praying. They moved forward and tried to apologize.

Malik al-Ashtar said, “I have come to the mosque to pray to Allah, the Exalted so that He forgives this young boy.”

From this we notice that this is forgiveness, sense of responsibility, and tolerance. You and I should practice such behavior.

We understand that we should ask good for others even if they have done bad to us we should try and ask for their guidance which results in increasing of our own spiritual levels and forgiveness. And just asking for the life of others will not transfer their life to yours or decrease their life.

From the other side, we know that Allah swt will punish the oppressors either in this world or in the Hereafter where the punishment and Hell is waiting for these sort of people. Allah swt always remember the oppressed ones and reward them. We should fear from Allah’s curse and not be amongst those groups on whom Allah swt have cursed in the Holy Quran.

Tyrant and Zalim should fear from the bad dua of the oppressed ones as the hadith says:

اتَّقُوا دَعْوَةَ الْمَظْلُومِ فَإِنَّهَا تُحْمَلُ عَلَى الْغَمَامِ فَیَقُولُ اللَّهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى وَعِزَّتِی وَجَلَالِی لَأَنْصُرَنَّكِ وَلَوْ بَعْدَ حِینٍ

Fear from the dua of the oppressed one because that dua goes upto skies and Allah swt says I promise I will help you even if the time passes.
