Ask an Alim

Did Imam Ali a.s. marry his daughter Umm kulthum to Umar

Q:

Did Imam Ali a.s. marry his daughter Umm kulthum to Umar? I have read online of some shia using this as a way of reasoning, saying that Umar and the others did not attack the house of Bibi Fatima s.a, they only threatened to and if they had attacked the house, surely Imam Ali a.s would not marry his daughter to such a person.

A:

Wa Alaykumussalam

Thank you for your query.

One of the misconceptions extensively propagated by the Ahlus Sunnah, particularly in recent years, revolves around the marriage of the second caliph with Umm Kulthum, the daughter of Imam Ali (as) and Fatimah Zahra (as). Through presenting this issue, they seek to imply a close relationship between Imam Ali and the caliphs. Simultaneously, they aim to cast doubt on the martyrdom of Lady Fatimah (as) and assert, “Which intellect would accept that Imam Ali (as) allowed his daughter to marry the one responsible for the death of his honourable wife Bibi Fatimah (as)?

I will list some of the websites below where you can read in detail about the misconception and the related traditions:

While raising a question regarding Umm Kulthum‘s marriage to Umar ibn Khattab, the story is famous and well- known among Sunni Muslims and the narrations regarding this marriage have also been reported in the books authored by Shia scholars. However, in spite of this story being well-known among Sunni Muslims and the fact that it has also been reported in some Shiite sources, some of our scholars have rejected the story on the ground that it is not true and genuine. If one goes through Shiite sources, he will see the rejection and refutation in the works authored by Sheikh Mufid, Sayyid Murtadha and Sayyid Nasir Hussain, the son of the author of Abaqat Al-Anwar (may Allah bless him) – and in the works by other figures who have engaged in the analysis and evaluation of this very subject matter.

The marriage of the second Khalīfah to Umm Kulthum has been narrated in both Shīʿah and Sunni books, however the different narrations vary from one another and are not the same. That which is common in both Shīʿah and Sunni narrations is that the second Khalīfah made a proposal to Umm Kulthum (via Imam Alī), however Imam Alī(as) did not approve. Some traditions stress that ‘Umar died before they could consummate the marriage and Imam Alī (as) brought Umm Kulthum back to his own home.
