Ask an Alim

depression due to poor result in studies

Q:

AOA I’m an a level student and I suffer from depression. I still haven’t decided my career. All my friends got As and A*s in their olevels and I got Bs. No matter how hard I try I can’t achieve my goals. I can’t get into any good university in Pakistan or abroad as I have a very poor result. All my friends are very intelligent and will become very successful in future. I’m a looser and I don’t want to live anymore. I will not commit sucide as it is haram and I don’t do drugs or drink. I pray 5 times a day. I’m in pain and at every point in my life I’ve suffered. I was bullied in school since playgroup and as I’m a dull student all my teachers hated me and my fellow classmates looked down on me. I want to end this pain and suffering and it can only end if I die.

Salaamun alaykum.

Thank you for your question. I know that sometimes it is hard to remain positive when it seems like so many factors around you are not in your favour. But it is only with a positive, fighting spirit that you will be able to overcome the issues that are making you feel low. Success is not dependent on your grades. It is dependent on your attitude and faith. There is more to being a human being to the job you have and the grades you got and success is measured not only according to this life but the next life as well. God only puts a servant in the best position for their own development and that may be through trial and test at times too. Patience, fortitude and prayer at these times is what will grant you success. Death before its time is not a solution. Rather, see these setbacks as an opportunity to develop something much more important which is a positive attitude in times of difficulty and you will see it as one of life’s valuable lessons.
May you always be successful.
