Ask an Alim

Does crossing in front of a person making dua nullify the prayer/Dua or brings ill luck in terms of Islam

Q:

My wife after completion of her prayer started Making Dua. Her eyes closed and hands cupped while making dua. She was on her prayer mat. I entered the room and directly crossed through the prayer mat in front of her. She felt this act of mine offensive. So i would like to ask regarding crossing in front of a person making dua in terms of Islam.

A:

Alaikum salam Wa Rahmatullah.

Thank you for your question.

You can assure your wife that there is no islamic ruling that if someone were to cross the prayer mat of another who is in the midst of reciting a dua or even a prayer, it would nullify the prayer (or dua)or mean any kind of ill luck.

The only thing it may do is probably drive the focus away of the dua or salat, which needs all the attention for the maximum benefit of the reciter.

Since the later might have been a mistake on your part, and InshAllah you will not repeat that to cause disturbance for her the next times, explain her politely that she has done her best to pray and Allah will answer her prayer InshaAllah.

Regards
Salma Alavi.
