Ask an Alim

Corona and Mosque prayers

Q:

In Quran, Surah Baqara, Ayat 114, Allah has warned and named those people Zalim who stop Muslims from praying in mosques and also push them to make mosques empty and deserted. I want to ask if we Muslims know this then why are our scholars stopping us from praying in mosques in this time of corona virus. Shouldn’t we believe in Quran ayats without any question and follow them?

A:

Wa alaykum salaam

The verse days :
“And who are more unjust than those who prevent the name of Allah being mentioned in His mosques and strive towards their destruction”

As you can see, the verse refers to those who want to destroy the mosques and do not want Allah’s name to be mentioned in them.

In the corona issue, those who have issued the order to close the mosques are not against mentioning Allah’s name in the mosques nor do they want to destroy them. The order has been issued in order to save the lives of the Muslims.

Islam is a practical religion and it is meant to be for all times and places. When studying the Quran, all the verses have to be studied and be pondered upon.
It’s not right to quote one verse and ignore other verses related to the topic.
If praying in the mosque is important in Islam, saving a human life is also very important.
Therefore, we should trust the scholars and leave it on them to decide what is more important in this situation as they have studied more than us.
