Conversion to Islam Just for the sake of marriage

Q:

Assalaam o Allaykum,

I am confused due to an issue currently facing within my family. A proposal from a Hindu Family has come for my sister. I had a long discussion with the Hindu person, but my concern is that I found in my discussion with him, that he only wants to get Muslim just because for Nikkah, in other words, he only wants to convert for a girl instead of Almighty ALLAH and His Last Messenger Muhammad (P.B.U.H), and My heart isn’t satisfied with it. Please guide me in this regard in light of Islamic teachings. JazakALLAH khair.

A:

Wa Alaikum al-salam

Thanks for your question

According to the office of Ayatollah Sistani, there is no problem in such marriage as long as that person converts to Islam before marriage and Sigha. But his conversion should not just be for the marriage. Rather, as you said should be for Islam.

What you can do is explain to him the meaning of accepting Islam and what follows after that, and make sure that he is telling the truth about accepting Islam (because otherwise there will be a big religious gap between your sister and him). Hence, it’s best to explain this and then give him some time e to make his mind up. Otherwise, this could lead to a bad experience
