Divorce in the Holy Household

Q:

Salaamun Alaikum.

An elderly person from my in-laws adviced that divorce if it takes place is allright by justifying that it also happened in the house of the Holy Prophet(S). I find this hard to believe that an Ideal person would not do an act disliked by Allah, and even if there was an issue he would try reconciliation to the maximum.

Please advice if this is correct.

A:

Alaykum Salaam

Islam recognizes that divorce is sometimes necessary, but discourages it unless there remains no other choice.

The following course is prescribed in the Qur’an:

And if you fear a breach between them, then appoint an arbiter from his folk and an arbiter from her folk. If they desire reconciliation, Allah will effect it between them. Surely, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware.
(Suratu Nisa 4/35)

The verse directs the couple to seek arbitration by appointment of one member from each party – God then states,  If they want to reconcile, God will cause it to be so.

Reconciliation is the most desirable course, even if a compromise on rights is made to achieve it.

In conclusion you are absolutely right when you say that it is disliked and every attempt to reconcile must be made before contemplating divorce.
