Ask an Alim

Certain extremist Shias of our time are claiming that most of classical Shia scholars, from Sheikh Mufid to Allama Majlisi, considered the Sunnis to be legally kafir. Is this true?

Q:

Salam
Certain extremist Shias of our time are claiming that most of classical Shia scholars, from Sheikh Mufid to Allama Majlisi, considered the Sunnis to be legally kafir. Is this true? If not, then how can this argument be refuted from references from the works of these scholars??

A:

Wa Alaykumussalam

Thank you for your query.

What you have mentioned is just a claim from these extremists and it is not correct to relate this to the Shia scholars.
All the Shia scholars believe the Sunni brothers to be Muslims. Anyone who testifies that God is One, and Prophet Muhammad(s.a.w.w) is His last messenger is a Muslim from the Shiite point of view.

What Shaikh Mufid had mentioned, he meant to deny Wilayat knowingly and intentionally. It means to be sure that someone knows that the Imamate is right and willfully denies it. But nowadays, there are many non-Shias who are following their path and ignoring the Wilayat and Imamat due to ignorance.

If you ask them to prove they will either show the wordings which the Shaikh means as explained above or will be Dhaeef an unauthentic if any.

Allamah Majlisi in Biharul Anwar vol65, pg244 says:

والإسلام هو الإذعان الظاهري بالله و برسوله و عدم‏ إنكار ما علم‏ ضرورة من دين الإسلام… فلا يشترط فيه ولاية الأئمة عليهم السلام

Islam is the outward submission to God and His Messenger and not denying what is known as a necessity from the religion of Islam….The Wilayat of the Imams is not a condition in it.

This statement clearly shows that in Islam, the Wilayat of Aimma is not a condition which means that a person who doesn’t believe in the Wilayat of the Imams but believes in Allah(swt) and His messenger is considered a Muslim.

The Sunnis have sects such as the Nasibis who are enemies of the Ahl al-Bayt(as), or the Khawarij sect, whose account is different from what was said about the general Sunnis; Therefore, Khwaja Nasir al-Din Tusi says:

« محاربوا علیّ کفره و مخالفوه فسقه ؛ محاربان با علی علیه السلام کافرند و مخالفان او فاسق » .

There is a difference between the verdict of the incapable Jahil (ignorant without fault) and the Jahil (ignorant without excuse). What is mentioned in the hadiths and the like is related to the Jahil people who deliberately and knowingly refuse to accept the Wilayat.

Kashf al-Murad, pg 349

There are two types of verdicts one is the ideological which is regarding the Aqaid and beliefs and the other is the jurisprudential verdict which is in Fiqh. It is quite possible the wordings which these people show is from an ideological point and not according to Fiqh as it is already proven that all the Shias believe the Sunnis are one of the sects of Islam.

May Allah(swt) grant you success
