Ask an Alim

Can we pray to Allah SWT to bless us with more Sons, than Daughters?

Q:

I have never had a brother in my life and I am the eldest child, with 4 younger sisters Alhamdulilah. I am also Alhamdulilah married and have 2 children (1 son and 1 daughter). My wife and I maybe would like to have 4 children inshaAllah, so 2 more from our current children.

Is it okay to pray to Allah SWT to grant us only Son’s from our future children. I really want my Son to have younger brothers (since I never had any)?

A:

Waalaykum al-Salam
Thank you for your question

May Allah bless you with righteous children.
While it is no harm to ask Allah (az) for more boys so that your son can have a same-gender sibling. However, a greater dua would be to ask Allah to bless you with what HE thinks will be best for you.
I will suggest you read dua no.25 by Imam Sajjad (as) where he prays for his children and asks Allah (az) to bless him with sons too (read the translation as well):
