Ask an Alim

Can I make profit on my travelling expense which is given by the Company.

Q:

Es Selamu Aleikum.
I live in Slovenia and I work at a state company, I travel about an hour every day for work, and I get money for travel expenses. Since the law in Slovenia is that the company has to pay our travel expenses, but the most cheapest, but now I have the opposite, I get the money for the most expensive transport, but I use the cheapest transport, so I make a profit . When I brought them a transport receipt, for example, by day, they agreed and approved, and I’m not the only one using it. The other day I was talking to a colleague and she told me it was a type of stealing and I disagreed, but I’m still not sure, so I’m a little confused too, so can you please answer me within Islam or Sharia law.

May Allah reward you

Thank you for your query.

Some of the companies usually pay the allowance for commute. If it is not mentioned for bus or train commuter it is being paid for, then there is no problem in using the money in any way of commuting you use. You can even go walking and are eligible to get the money.

But if they mention for a particular purpose then it should be used in that proper way.

If they pay you the whole amount of commuting together and not mentioned then you can use it in any way you desire for commuting. But if they take the receipts and pay you equivalent to the price you have paid, then you should show them the original receipt and get according to it.
