Ask an Alim

Can I as a Muslim make Dua for a non muslim relative on his death?

Q:

Asalamu Alikom.

Is it possible to make dua for my late grandfather who was a catholic? And go to his graveyard and recite quran or other duas.

Jazak Allahu Khaira.

A:

Wa Alaykumussalam

Thank you for your query.

According to the Islamic Shariah we can pray for them as far as they were not enemies of Allah(swt). If our relatives are non-Muslims are alive, we can pray for their guidance so they can convert to the righteous religion and make their Akhirah. Besides this, we should also pray for our good ending so we die on faith and Islam. So, you can pray for your grandfather with hope in Allah’s mercy.

May Allah(swt) grant you success

Wassalam,

Syed Haider
