Ask an Alim

Can Fidya be given to relatives?

Q:

Salams,

Is it possible to donate fidya to relatives in a poor country? They live in a village and aren’t rich, often struggle for money but not necessarily poor to the point they are penniless.

Do they qualify for fidya?

A:

Al-Salam Alaykum
Thank you for your question,

Fidya cannot be given to those relatives who are Wajib Al-Nafaqa.  This means you must provide for your parents and children if they cannot provide for themselves and your wife whether she can provide for herself or not.

As for other relatives, you can give them Fidya if they are poor. Poor in Sharia means they can not provide for their life as other people in their social class spend.
