Ask an Alim

Can a person whose health is getting affected have non halal food served at the mess

Q:

My son is studying in USA. He has to stay there for 5 years. He is living in hostel. He has to eat in mess /dining hall meant for all students. As chicken and mutton etc is not slaughtered in Islamic way hence he does not eat it. Pakistani Bread also not available in mess. He is suffering and his health is being effected negatively. As a compulsion can he eat chicken and mutton there? Please clarify. Regards.

Salamun Alaykum

Thank you for your query.

I can imagine it is very difficult in these situations but unfortunately, he cannot eat chicken or mutton unless sure it was slaughtered according to Shar’iah.

He can eat rice, vegetables and types of different proteins, calories, carbohydrates etc. He can also eat their bread if he isn’t sure whether their hands have directly come in contact with the wheat or not.

And also you can try to find out some places where you can get Halal chicken or mutton.

May Allah(swt) grant you success
