Ask an Alim

Buying things on the chelum of imam as.

Q:

If we buy some items on 20 safar(chelum of imam)(being forgetful of chelum)wat should we do i mean some sadqa should be given before using them so that nothing bad happens to us.

A:

Salamun Alaykum

Thank you for your query.

Regarding the Day of Ashura we find that the Umayyads used to celebrate the day of Ashura and used to purchase products so it can be blessed and beneficial for them. So in this sense the utmost it can be declared makrooh if so, otherwise there is no problem in buying the daily needed household items. I haven’t gone through any similar tradition regarding Arbaeen. But one should commemorate the day of Arbaeen(Chehlum) in a way which shouldn’t proclaim or exhibit the action or buying to be out of necessity.

May Allah(swt) grant you success
