Black Clothing on Ka’bah

Q:

Asalam Alaikum

I am doing a research for my art history class and I am wondering about the history of the Ka’bah.

Why is the holy Ka’bah kiswa(clothing) black?

A:

Alaykum Salaam

Historically, the kiswa (covering of the Ka’bah) has been several colours, red, yellow and white. Generally the Caliphs of the day would send a new covering every year, usually at Haj time. From the time of Ma’mun Abbasi it was white until the reign of Nasir Dinullah who changed it to black in 621 AH and it has been black ever since.

Kind regards,
