Ask an Alim

If someone doesnt believe in imamat will he be a muslim?

Q:

Twelvers believe that 12 imams were divinely appointed by ALLAH and they are superior than Prophets. So if someone doesnt believe in imamat will he be a muslim?secondly which clear verses of quran and sahih ahadith explain 12 imams.?

A:

In the Name of Allah, the All-Beneficent, the All-Merciful.
Wa-Alaykum Assalam Wa Rahmtu-Allah,

To be a Muslim, the minimum requirement is that you testify with the two testaments that there is no god but Allah swt and that Mohammad is his messenger, pbuh.

Therefore even if there are perversions in the ideaology – you are still considered a Muslim if you have made those testaments.

Also, it is important to know that the twelvers do not believe that the 12 Imams are superior than the Holy Prophet (s)

As for proof from the Holy Qur’an and the narrations, there have been volumes written on the issue. One excellent book is the following: https://www.al-islam.org/al-murajaat-abd-al-husayn-sharaf-al-din-al-musawi
