Ask an Alim

backbiting mistake is haunting

Q:

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah. Im a beginner at practicing Islam. I made a mistake which I shouldn’t have done. Doing ghibah about any brother / sister in Islam is a grave sin and specially, mostly women would be in Jahannam for doing it. Now, there are two or three people about whom I couldn’t stop myself from saying things which are not appropriate due to hatred and the most problem is the are males for which its not really possible for me to ask their forgiveness. But my mistake is constantly haunting me down and Im in the middle of the ocean not knowing exactly what should I do to repent.

A:

Waalaykum Salaam,
Thank you for your question. If you cannot seek the persons forgiveness, then you should repent and seek forgiveness from Allah for backbiting (according to the office of Ayatollah Sistani (hA)).

Seeking forgiveness from Allah is straightening your relationship with Him by saying you are sorry for what you have done. True and sincere repentance is to make a firm intention never to return to that sin; and if any lapses occur a renewing of that intention is in order. If you do this there is no reason to relive your mistake or to let it haunt you. Rather put your hope in God and work on ridding yourself of all forms of hatred directed at believers. Sometimes we make mistakes, but what is important is to learn and develop from them.

May you always be successful and attain the benefits of true repentance
